Cancun Tips to Stay Safe

Cancun is one of the most popular Spring Break destinations and for good reason.

It’s absolutely gorgeous and every year its packed with hundreds of thousands of party goers ready to relax, unwind and get a little crazy. It’s a perfect place to join the party and have some fun during Spring Break.

But before you enjoy a little fun in the sun, there are a few things to keep in mind.

10 Tips for a Smooth Vacation

Follow these tips to ensure that you get the most out of your Spring Break vacation in Cancun.

Tip #1 – Cancun is one of the premiere destinations for Spring Break, so in order to get the best deal, always book your vacation packages as a group whenever possible. And don’t wait too long. You’ll want to book your trip at least six months in advance to get the best price.

Tip #2 – Anytime you’re planning a trip, especially out of the country, it’s a good idea to make copies of your entire itinerary, including flight numbers and the name, address and phone number of the hotel you’ll be staying at so that your friends or family can get in touch with you in the case of an emergency.

Tip #3 – When you’re visiting a foreign country, especially Mexico, it’s a good idea to never leave your resort alone. Always go with at least one other person.

Tip #4 – Spring Break destinations like Cancun attract all kinds of people, and unfortunately, some of those have less than honorable intentions. Don’t make yourself an easy target by keeping your money in your purse or anywhere else that can be easily snatched. Instead, keep your cash and your passport in a money belt.

Tip #5 – There is more to Cancun than beaches. In fact, it has a very rich and vibrant history that is worth exploring so you should definitely check out the ruins of Cancun and many of the other sites in and around the city.

Tip #6 – Before you leave your resort, always let someone know where you’re going and how long you’ll be gone, even if going out with a group. If you aren’t back by then, they should alert the authorities. This may sound too cautious, but there has been an increase in violence in Mexico recently so you can never be too careful.

Tip #7 –There’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks, but you should never get so intoxicated that you lose your senses because you may do something you’ll regret, which is a big mistake, especially in foreign countries.

Tip #8 – Being imprisoned in a foreign country is a nightmare, and unfortunately, it happens all too often over Spring Break. To avoid this, don’t use any illegal substances, at home or abroad.

Tip #9 – Never accept a drink from anyone you don’t know, and never leave your drink unattended, even for a moment. All too many robberies and rapes occur because something was slipped into a drink.

Tip #10– You’ve been careful to stay out of trouble your whole trip, so don’t blow it on your way home. Make sure that you obey all of the traffic laws so that you don’t find yourself pulled over for speeding or driving recklessly when you go to return your rental car.

Spring Break Lake Havasu

You may want to brace yourself for this news, but you need to hear it. The real action for Spring Break this year will not be at the beaches, at least not beaches on the ocean. Yes, it’s a fact, more of the best action for Spring Break will be at Lake Havasu.

As more people are finding out what a great location Lake Havasu is, more people are flocking there for their Spring Break fun. Sure, there will still be people visiting the traditional beaches, but the people who like to visit cutting edge destinations know that they need to head West to find the real parties this year at Lake Havasu.

Where is Lake Havasu?

Since this vacation spot is still a bit under the radar, some people aren’t even sure where it is. Lake Havasu is located on the border between Arizona and California, right on a huge reservoir on the Colorado River. This reservoir is crystal clear, clean water, the likes of which you simply can’t find anywhere else in the United States.

No, this isn’t the conventional beach that your parents like to visit to relax, this is Lake Havasu. Things get wild when Spring Breakers converge on this town, and the party pretty much goes on around the clock.

People that are looking for the best way to spend their precious Spring Break vacation, but want a truly unique place to do it at, are continually returning to Lake Havasu. The old-school beaches and played out party spots simply can’t compare to the good times that are had every year at this Arizona destination.

Houseboat Anyone?

Even the places that people stay while on a Lake Havasu Spring Break are different from the ordinary. Sure, there are hotels and you can stay at one, but aren’t you ready to try something new? If you are, how does a houseboat filled with you and your friends sound? Pretty good, right?

One of the most popular forms of accommodations for trips to Lake Havasu are houseboats. Imagine staying right on the crystal clear water of the pristine reservoir and waking up to a quick dip in the warm water. That’s the way to live when you’re on Spring Break and that’s how people are going to be doing it on their Lake Havasu Spring Break this year. Aren’t you ready to get in on some of these good times?

What You’ll Do

Of course, with so many people realizing that Lake Havasu is the place to be, there are sure to be tons of events on the water. Houseboat parties will be plentiful and there will be plenty of people running around in their best beach wear having the time of their lives.

Lake Havasu is less about planning to have a good time, and more about actually having it. Once you do your Spring Break at Lake Havasu, you’ll probably be hooked for life. Give your Spring Break the shot in the arm its been needing for years and change course to Lake Havasu for this year’s Spring Break.

Myrtle Beach is one of those places that you might have visited on a family vacation over the years.

In fact, lots of people make this South Carolina destination their yearly vacation spot. Family vacations are good and well, but have you ever taken a Spring Break Myrtle Beach trip before?

If not, you may not realize how much you’ve been missing. Sure, you may have seem Myrtle Beach through the eyes of a yearly vacationer, but it’s a totally different experience to come here for Spring Break.

A Yearly Tradition

For years people have picked Myrtle Beach as their favorite spot for Spring Break trips. It’s no wonder why this town is almost considered the Official City of Spring Break. They know how to show vacationers a good time in this beautiful South Carolina city, and you’ll find that there is so much to do, that you may decide to extend your Spring Break and avoid going back to class. Whether or not that’s practical for you, one thing’s for sure – you’re going to have a blast on your Spring Break Myrtle Beach trip.

Why Not Stay at a Party House?

Hotels are fine, and sometimes motels have to do, but if you want to really have the full Spring Break experience in Myrtle Beach, you need to check out some of the Party Houses for rent. These are the favorite accommodations for Spring Breakers every year.

There are lots of Party House style condos for rent that will put you right in the thick of things for a great time on your Spring Break trip. In fact, these houses are pretty much the nucleus of the party scene in Myrtle Beach. If you plan on really living it up (and who doesn’t) on your Spring Break, then you’ve got to at least swing by North Myrtle Beach to check out the Party Houses and see what’s going on.

Spring Break Myrtle Beach – The Party Never Stops

Lots of towns lay claim to being the place to go for Spring Break, but few of them can compare to Myrtle Beach. The locals expect lots of Spring Break visitors every year, the businesses roll out the red carpet to welcome students and the good times just never stop.

Even when things get a little wild and crazy, there’s used to that in Myrtle Beach. As long as you are respectful and don’t take anyone for granted, you’ll find the people of Myrtle Beach more than welcoming and accommodating to you during your Spring Break trip. They know that students want to have a good time, and they go out of their way to try and make that happen.

Don’t spend a fortune trying to jet to some fancy, “hip” Spring Break Location. If you want the authentic Spring Break experience, you have to do yours in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. This is the true spot for people that want nothing but a good time on their Spring Break vacation.

Spring Break Ideas

If you had to summarize the Spring Break experience, most people would probably say something along the lines of sun, sand and beaches. Or all night parties, a never ending stream of alcohol and romantic flings.

But there is so much more to do on Spring Break, and so many destinations that don’t necessarily involve beaches.

This year consider some of these fresh Spring Break ideas:

There’s More To The Great Outdoors Than The Beach

There’s no doubt that beaches offer plenty of “fun in the sun” but they aren’t the only destination you should consider this Spring Break. For example, there are camping destinations all over the world, and tons of them right here in the US. Rather than following everyone else to overcrowded hotspots for Spring Break, pack up the car with your friends or family and head to the great outdoors.

You could camp out in tents, or you could rent a mini-camper or RV, even a luxury log cabin in the woods complete with internet access, big screen TVs, Jacuzzis and more – basically everything you need for your own private party!

If you’re stumped for destinations, the Grand Canyon is the perfect place for your Spring Break camping trip.

Vegas, Baby, Vegas!

While everyone else is spending their Spring Break on crowded beaches in Florida or Mexico, take your party straight to Vegas! Spring is much more comfortable in Vegas than the summer time when temperatures can easily climb to 110 degrees.

Better still, there are tons of activities in Vegas for you and your friends or family. Of course you have all of the casinos and stage shows, but there is also a very active night life as well as plenty of other things to do like dune buggy adventures and indoor skydiving.

Out Of The Ordinary Can Be Extraordinary

Many Spring Breakers simply follow the crowds to the beach. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that and there is undoubtedly plenty of fun to be had there, but plenty of rewards await those who decide to get off the beaten path.

Just use your imagination and you will find that there are plenty of other destinations worthy of your time. Take scuba diving for example. Many of the same beach resorts that are popular with Spring Breakers offer scuba packages that are cheap and yet tons of fun. Many even help you to complete your certification in just 3 days. What could be more fun than spending your Spring Break in crystal clear water surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth?

Another idea for the adrenaline junkies out there is air combat. Say what? That’s right, air combat! Pack up your buddies this Spring Break and head out to one of several locations that offer to let you fly, yes fly, real WWII airplanes or F15 fighter jets. You’ll first go through a 2 or 3 hour training session and then get the chance to take the controls and fly one of these bad boys. It’s sure to be a Spring Break trip you’ll never forget!

Spring Break Deals

Spring Break is the perfect time to escape the daily grind and enjoy a little fun in the sun, but many people end up staying in because they’re afraid most destinations will break the bank.

The truth is you can actually find great deals on Spring Break vacations; you just have to know where to look and follow a few important tips.

Tip #1 – Book Early

If you’re planning on hitting one of the major Spring Break destinations like South Padre Island in Texas, Panama City or Daytona Beach in Florida, or Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas or Cancun in Mexico, then you need to book your reservations early, very early. Rooms in these locations will fill up quickly and if you wait too long, you will have to pay premium prices to get in.

Tip #2 – Visit A Big City

You don’t have to follow the crowd and hit the beach this Spring Break. Instead, consider choosing one big city and exploring it for the week. You can find great deals on hotels or hostels online and even tickets for games and many other attractions that big cities have to offer. Best of all, major cities are much cheaper to travel to than exotic beaches.

Tip #3 – Empty Cruise Cabins Are Cheap

Believe it or not, you can often find great deals on empty cruise cabins, even during such a busy time as Spring Break because not every school district and college campus closes at the same time. That means you can find four and even seven day cruises for huge discounts as the cruise lines try and fill empty cabins at the last minute.

Tip #4 – Check Special Offer Pages

Many resorts like Walt Disney World have special pages on their website where they offer steep discounts, often 25% or more, on selected rooms. You’ll need to book early to take advantage of these deals because they don’t last long, but it can significantly reduce the cost of your trip to Disney or other theme parks.

Tip #5 – Book Your Airfare ASAP

When planning your Spring Break vacation, the worst thing you can do is wait to book your airfare. As soon as your destination is decided, immediately shop around for airfare deals. Check each airline’s special offer pages for discounted airfares or use one of the many online airfare comparison websites.

Tip #6 – Visit A National Park

During the summer, popular national parks in the United States and Canada quickly fill up and campsites become difficult, if not impossible to find. This year, consider beating the crowd by visiting a national park in the Spring when they are less crowded. No matter where you live, chances are there is a beautiful national park within a day’s drive and they make the perfect destination for Spring Break.

Tip #7 – Go Abroad

Taking your Spring Break out of the country doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, March and April are very slow tourism months in Europe, which means you can often find great deals on European vacations.

Cheap Spring Break Trips

Spring Break is the perfect time to escape the daily grind and head out on vacation, but for many people there is one small problem – the stereotypical Spring Break destinations are expensive!

By the time you factor in airfare, accommodations and everything else, Spring Break can quickly become far more than most people, like college students, can afford.

Fortunately, there are many alternatives to the traditional Spring Break that still offer plenty of fun and excitement.

Stumped for ideas? No problem! Here are a few to get you started.

Road Trip, Baby!

While you might think that most college students head to Cancun or some other exotic beach location for Spring Break, more and more are opting for alternative vacations like road trips. Why? Because there’s nothing more fun than packing up the car and hitting the road with your buddies for a spontaneous road trip adventure. You don’t even need to have a destination in mind, just pick a direction and go! But don’t feel like you have to stick to the highways – take the scenic routes whenever possible and you’re more likely to find new and exciting places to explore along the way!

Hit the Big City

There is more to Spring Break than sun, sand and beaches. In fact, big cities make a great destination too and best of all, travel fares are much cheaper than those to exotic locations. Consider visiting San Diego, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston or New York City. All of these big cities have an endless variety of activities for you to choose from, like clubs, bars, shops, modern or historic attractions and special events.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

If big cities aren’t your thing, consider spending your Spring Break in the great outdoors, and no, we’re not talking about the beach! No matter where you live, chances are there is a National park or campgrounds nearby, or at least within a day’s drive. Going camping is the perfect alternative to the crowded beaches that everyone else is headed to and best of all, it’s relatively inexpensive. To save money you can go tent camping, or pool together and spring for a log cabin rental. Either way, it’s the perfect chance to enjoy a little down to earth time with your buddies and enjoy hiking, mountain biking or fishing.

Volunteer

If you’re a generous soul and your busy work or school life keeps you from helping out in the community as much as you’d like, consider using your Spring Break to volunteer. There are many people out there in need and volunteering your time to help rebuild communities or work with individuals can be a very rewarding experience, both for you and the people you help. Best of all, there are opportunities all around the country, giving you a chance to see someplace new while doing a few good deeds. Needless to say this option isn’t for everyone, but remember, Spring Break isn’t just about parties and beaches. There are plenty of other options for you this year, you just have to open your mind and stop following the crowd!

Consider pampering each other in a luxury resort, or head out on a more adventurous vacation like camping or white water rafting.

Invite your friends and family over, camp out in the backyard and throw a BBQ! Go visit that local attraction you’ve been meaning to but never had time for, or simply relax at home. Remember, Spring Break isn’t always about the destination – it’s about taking the time to relax, unwind and enjoy a little break from everyday life.

Spring Break History

The Spring Break we know and love today, which is invariably associated with sun, sand, bikinis, booze and questionable romances isn’t a modern invention.

In fact, our ancestors have celebrated the return of Spring for thousands of years and in many of the same ways that rowdy college students do today.

Follow along for a brief recap on the history and traditions of this iconic holiday.

Spring Break in Ye Olden Times

Written records show that Spring Break can be traced all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, if not earlier. Spring was considered to be the season of fertility, and to celebrate its return, men and women (who were still in their prime mating years) would engage in all sorts of pagan rituals, usually involving Dionysus or Bacchus, the Greek and Roman gods of Wine.

As you can imagine, days of drinking and dancing often led to the enjoyment of other earthly pleasures. Christianity later tried, unsuccessfully, to stop such rituals and if you’ve been to any Spring Break celebrations recently, it’s pretty clear that the spirit of Dionysus and Bacchus lives on in young people today!

Spring Break in Modern Times

Spring Break in the United States can be traced back to 1936 when the swim coach of Colgate University decided to take the team down to Fort Lauderdale, where they could practice at the Casino Pool, the first Olympic sized swimming pool ever built in Florida.

The trip was such a hit with the students that he brought them all back the following year and by 1961, over 50,000 college students were making the trip each year to enjoy all of the sun, sand and beachesthat Fort Lauderdale had to offer. Daytona Beach also became a popular Spring Break destination in the 1960s after a massive advertising campaign, and by the end of the decade, over 100,000 students made it their destination of choice each year.

In the 1970s, alcohol, drugs and “free love” became part and parcel of the rapidly evolving Spring Break culture, leaving many cities like Fort Lauderdale second guessing their role as a destination for party goers. When tens of thousands of students descended on the city each year, they flooded the local economy with millions of dollars, but they also caused plenty of damage and trouble as well, which put a serious dent in the city’s coffers.

By the late 1990s, Spring Break continued to grow in popularity and expand to other destinations like Panama City, Cancun, and Jamaica, many of which attract crowds of half a million college students or more each year.

Spring Break Today

Today Spring Break has become a right-of-passage of sorts for college students and continues to evolve, with more exotic and international locations becoming popular destinations for crowds eager to enjoy the all night parties and sandy beaches that are associated with this iconic holiday.

And yet despite its evolution, Spring Break still resembles the celebrations carried out by our ancestors thousands of years ago – some things really never change!
